Operations
The Sheriff is responsible
for the operation of the county jail facility, now located at 130
Homestead Avenue. The new Justice Center opened on October
28, 2001, replacing the former jail in downtown Hillsboro.
Contracts for the former
jail were let out on March 21, 1894. The Enterprise Planning Mill
contracted to furnish the lumber for the present jail and do the
woodwork and plumbing; George Snider, the roof; Washington Doggett
and Job Insley the painting; Jerry Foley, the stonework; and M.
Clements, the steel and iron work. The jail was considered officially
completed on May 29, 1895.
The former jail was in
use for over 106 years. Although it has been updated over the years,
it could not be made to meet state standards and did not have enough
cell space to meet today's inmate population demands.
The Sheriff also operates
a uniformed patrol division responsible for police services to the
residents of Highland County. Specialized officers will follow up
on investigations initiated by the patrol division and will provide
assistance to other agencies when requested. Specialized officers
are also responsible for crime scene investigations, crime prevention
techniques, juvenile services, and investigation of vice-related
incidents.
The Sheriff operates a
multi-jurisdictional communications center, providing radio communication
to local law enforcement agencies, all county volunteer E.M.T.'s,
squads and fire departments.
Highland County covers
554 square miles of land which consists of 1,460 miles of roadway
patrolled by the Sheriff's Department.
Community
Service
As a community service,
the Highland County Sheriff's Department operates a speakers bureau.
